Tyler features a large, state-of-the-art healthcare and medical community, built around a series of major hospital and clinic systems, including the UT Health East Texas (formerly ETMC) and CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System, that serve all of the East Texas region.

Today, in 2024, these hospital systems are the largest job employers in the Tyler area, each with over 4,000 employees.

Also, the Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital is a highly respected facility, located on South Broadway Avenue.

These major hospitals, clinics, outpatient facilities, and doctors offices in the Tyler area hire thousands of doctors, nurses, lab technicians, xray technicians, CT technologists, pharmacists, urgent care specialists, occupational therapists, and dozens of other medical jobs.

Health care is the largest employer in Tyler with approximately 25,000 full-time jobs and 9,000 indirect jobs. One in three jobs is directly related to health care. Health care in the Tyler area has an annual economic impact of $1.2 billion.

While UT Health and Trinity Mother Frances have their major hospitals located in Tyler proper, these institutions offer large, fully-equipped clinics in locales such as Canton, Jacksonville, Lake Palestine, Pittsburg, Athens, Lindale, Whitehouse, and many other East Texas sites.

Medical School in Tyler

The University of Texas System has established a medical school in Tyler, the seventh in the UT System. It was founded to address the shortage of physicians and lack of access to healthcare in East Texas, with the singular goal of improving the quality of life and health in the region.

In January of 2023 Texas Governor Greg Abbott joined UT System leaders to break ground on UT Tyler’s new Medical Education Building, located near UT Health East Texas and CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Hospital on South Beckham Avenue.

According to the School of Medicine, 95% of students in the inaugural class are from East Texas counties, including Smith, Gregg, Bowie, Harrison, Angelina, Cherokee, Wood and Kaufman..

Tyler is also home to two nursing schools at the University of Texas at Tyler and Tyler Junior College. Students have the advantage of learning through clinical rotations at both major hospitals, leading to well-educated nurses with hands-on learning experience under expert supervision.

UT Health East Texas

Formed in 2018 through the combination of East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System (ETMC) and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (UT Health Northeast), UT Health East Texas provides care to thousands of patients each year through an extensive regional network of hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, freestanding emergency centers, urgent care facilities and other facilities.

It provides a system of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities and services throughout East Texas.

Included is 12 hospitals, 40 clinics, a regional rehabilitation/fitness network, a trauma/emergency system, regional home health coverage, and other services.

It was announced on September 15, 2023, that UT Health East Texas will be constructing a new $12 million facility in Tyler. The two-story, 20,000-square-foot building will be located near the corner of Old Jacksonville Highway and Three Lakes Parkway, adjacent to an existing UT Health clinic. It is slated to open in mid to late 2024.

UT Health East Texas utilizes a strategy to provide care in rural areas whenever possible. It is organized to provide primary care in rural health clinics, secondary care in affiliate hospitals and tertiary care in Tyler.

CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System

Trinity Mother Frances Hospital has a proud tradition of over 80 years of dedicated service to the residents of East Texas.

As national leader in patient satisfaction, advanced technology and quality initiatives, Trinity Mother Frances is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating healthy lives for people and communities.

In 2016, Trinity Mother Frances completed a partnership with CHRISTUS Health to become CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System and CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic.

Trinity Clinic is the area's preferred multispecialty medical group, with over 350 physicians and mid-level providers representing 40 specialties in 36 clinic locations serving East Texas.

It also opertes several UrgentCare facilities in East Texas.

The new Louis & Peaches Owen Heart Hospital offers leading-edge programs in minimally invasive and robotic heart and thoracic surgery, treatment of arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction (MI), and peripheral vascular disease, along with outstanding programs focused on cardiac rehabilitation, patient education and research.

The Bill Herrington and Joseph Z. Ornelas HealthPark is located on 5.5 acres at the intersection of Grande Boulevard and Texas Highway 110 near Whitehouse. The park houses the health system’s Ross Breast Center, physical therapy services, a fitness center with a lap pool, an urgent care center, a sleep center, imaging services and a lab. It has 12 primary care physicians, including doctors from both Tyler and Whitehouse.

The Mother Frances Hospital South Tyler, at 8389 S. Broadway Avenue, at the corner of Cumberland Road opened in 2017. The three-story hospital includes an emergency department, eight inpatient beds, advanced imaging and diagnostic laboratory services. The 2nd floor contains a freestanding imaging center, and the 3rd floor an ambulatory surgery center with five operating room suites.

The CHRISTUS Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute, located at the corner of South Broadway Avenue and Cumberland Road, is a 62,000-square-foot facility home to teams of world-class orthopedic, sports medicine and podiatry clinicians, providing residents and athletes of Northeast Texas and Tyler with diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation in one centralized location. It opened in August of 2021.

The Northeast Texas Cancer and Research Institute, a new  collaboration between CHRISTUS Health and Texas Oncology, was dedicated in late 2022. The new 85,000-square-foot institute features specialized areas for Texas Oncology-Tyler, including clinic space for medical oncology, hematology, gynecologic oncology, radiation oncology, and nearly 3,000 square feet of dedicated clinical research space. It is located at 501 S Saunders Avenue in Tyler.

UT Tyler Health Science Center

University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, located just northeast of Tyler on U.S. 271, is a unique medical center providing a wide range of therapies and treatment to all of northeast Texas.

As the only university medical center in Northeast Texas, UT Health Science Center serves Northeast Texas and beyond through excellent patient care and community health, comprehensive education, and innovative research.

Veterans Administration

The Veterans Administration Tyler Centennial Clinic offers primary care and specialty health services, including mental health services, vision care, telehealth services, women’s health care, and more. It is located at 428 Centennial Parkway in Tyler, in back of the Village at Cumberland Park, just off South Broadway Avenue near Toll Loop 49.

Fresenius Medical Care

Groundbreaking was held on March 2, 2016 for an $11.2 million building to house Fresenius Medical Care, an international company that will bring 300 to 350 new jobs to Tyler. Fresenius currently employs 120 people in three clinics and a business support center in Tyler.

The company will expand its two-story, 80,000 sf structure on the northeast corner of Earl Campbell Parkway and Southwest Loop 323.
