The St. Louis, Arkansas & Texas established itself as a pioneer in the railroad-hospital field in 1887 by opening a hospital department. The first hospital, built in Tyler, was completed in 1888 and operated there for 17 years.
This concept worked well and was well respected; however, as the railway grew geographically, it was decided to relocate the hospital to a more central city. The railroad purchased a 37-acre tract of land in Texarkana, Arkansas and built a new hospital there in 1904. Situated high on a hill, the structure was surrounded by park-like grounds. In 1927, a nurses' home was added to the grounds.
